(Taiwan) Mayor Ma opens Nankang biotech exhibition

With the opening presided over by Taipei City Mayor Ma Ying-jeou, the first biotech-focused exhibition held at the Nankang Software Park opened May 30. Nankang BIO 2005 will run over four days and will include forums and presentations from local biotechnology experts from both the government and the private sector.

The exhibition includes about 20 booths featuring companies and government promotion bodies located at the Nankang Biotechnology Plaza, Taiwan's newest location especially set up to house life science companies and research institutes, and located inside the software park.

In his opening remarks, Ma talked about prospects for the Biotechnology Plaza, and discussed the city's plans to develop a high-tech corridor in North Taipei, to include the software park, the Neihu area science park and a new development planned for the Shilin district of Taipei city.

As well as the exhibition, the event will feature presentations from government representatives on how Taiwan's biotech companies can continue to grow by taking advantage of the many government incentive and assistance programs on offer particularly for the development of the industry.

Representatives of the venture capital industry would also be making presentations over the course of the four-day event.

Participating companies and institutes include:

• Shin Era Technology Co., Ltd., a chitosan health food, cosmetics and anti-bacteria textiles company.

• Neupro Technology Co., Ltd., a developer of portable diagnostics devices.

• Tritech Biopharmaceuticals Co., Ltd., a company making consumer hydrogel patches, cosmetics and transdermal patches.

• NTU Innovation Incubation Center, based at National Taiwan University.

• Universal Vision Biotechnology Co., Ltd., a laser eye surgery technology company.

• Utekm International Corporation, an agent for overseas-based lab equipment companies.

• Genesis Biotech Inc., a company offering gene function discovery and antibody and peptide products.

• BiotechEast Co., Ltd., a Taipei-based life science marketing and business consulting company.

• Panion & BF Biotech Inc., a health products and cosmetics company.

• Eng Chio Biotechnology Co., Ltd., a health food company.

• Alps Biotech Co., Ltd., a herbal formulation company.

• BioEra, a magazine focusing on Taiwan's life science sector.

• Biotechnology & Pharmaceutical Industries Program Office (BPIPO), the Ministry of Economic Affairs' office for the promotion of Taiwan's life science industries.

• IBM and PricewaterhouseCoopers Taiwan also have booths at the exhibition.
