(Taiwan) ITRI's Incubator Center named best of its kind in Asia

26 May, 2005
The incubator center of Hsinchu's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) has won the annual award of the Asian Association of Business Incubation, local media reported on Tuesday. The center has played an active role in the development of local life science companies since its opening in 1996.

The center is scheduled to be presented with the title at an award-presentation ceremony in August in Seoul, South Korea, an ITRI official said.

The Asian Association of Business Incubation (AABI), founded in 2002, is the Asian branch of the world's largest business incubation organization, the National Business Incubation Association of the United States, and the largest of its kind in Asia with nine members from nine areas in the region.

The AABI Award is presented to the highest score-holder in six major assessment categories -- the management of the incubator, the range of services, the current state of incubated businesses, results of incubation efforts, financial conditions, and successful graduating businesses.

According to ITRI statistics, the incubator center has helped created 133 technology-based businesses since it started operations in 1996. In the life sciences, the center is currently home to two companies: CESCO Bioengineering Co. (cell cultivating systems); and Excelsior BioSystem Co. (micro-ELISA, laser scanner).

Successful 'graduates' from the center in the life sciences include Agnito Corp (bioinformatics); Savior Lifetec Corp (antibiotics); New Medical Co., Ltd. (medical imaging technology); Biomen Technology Corporation (dental implants and devices); Expax Pharma, Inc. (drug delivery systems, new dosage forms); and Ripo International Biotechnology Co., Ltd. (home-use medical diagnostics).
