TABA holds its annual event in Kaohsiung, co-hosts two others

Life Science News (Press Release)

20 December, 2004
The southern California-based Taiwan-America Biotech Association (TABA), ended the year with a flurry of activity co-sponsoring three conferences in Taiwan during late November.

Panel discussion at the Herbal Medicine Round Table, November 29, 2004, Taipei

First up was the association's annual conference (or TABC - Taiwan-America Biotech Conference and Exhibition), this year also entitled IBCE 2004 - The International Biotech Conference and Exhibition 2004. This year's conference was held from November 25-27 at the National Kaohsiung Marine University. The event was co-sponsored by the University.

Another event where TABA played a hosting role was the International Symposium on Genomic Medicine and Molecular Diagnosis, held at the Changhua Christian Hospital on November 28th. Several foreign speakers at IBCE-2004 came directly from Kaohsiung to Changhua to attend this one-day event; for example, John Williams, Director of Reproductive Genetics, UCLA.

Following on from this event was the Herbal Medicine Round Table, held in Taipei on November 29th. The event took place at the Taipei Medical University, and was cosponsored by TABA, the Taipei Medical University, the Huang Foundation and the Biomedical Engineering Center (BMEC) of the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI). The theme of the forum was 'The internationalization, globalization and scientification of herbal medicine.' Five of the six speakers at the event were TABA members. Topics of discussion included regulatory processes, quality control, marketing and new drug development.

According to Dr. Helen Chen, secretary of the association, unlike most conferences that focus on the exchange of academic knowledge, this conference had both academic and industry input. The audience was mostly from the herbal medicine industry, and included investors and consultants as well. The meeting ended with a round table discussion, followed by dinner.

TABA was founded in January 2002 by a group of biotech-oriented Taiwanese Americans working and residing in southern California. The association was formed to promote collaboration of biotech research as well as development of biotech industries in Taiwan and US. TABA holds its annual biotech conference in either the US or Taiwan, with the first held in San Diego, California in August 2002 in conjunction with the National Science Council of Taiwan.
