The island's latest biomedical technologies and products were on display at the Taiwan Pavilion, in the convention's giant exhibition area.

A business forum introducing investment and collaboration opportunities was another highlight, organized by Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and held at the Atlanta Hilton Hotel on May 18.

The event was hosted by ITRI President Dr. Johnsee Lee, and was attended by a number of distinguished guests including Representative Charlice Byrd of the Georgia State House of Representatives. A number of Taiwanese industry notables took part, including Director of the Office of Public Affairs and Technology Transfer at the Academia Sinica Dr. Chi-Ming Liang, the National Health Research Institute's Dr. Yu-Sheng Chao, and Director of the Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industries Program Office of the MOEA Dr. Chei-Hsiang Chen.

In addition, Dr. Gary Miller from Exactech Inc. shared his company's successful experience at the seminar, explaining how Exactech worked with local institutes and government groups to develop a cooperative venture in Taiwan.

ITRI representatives used the gathering to also introduce its most recent life science-related research breakthroughs.

Once such breakthrough; ITRI's new collagen scaffold antibodies. According to ITRI, the scaffold antibody is highly stable and reduces the side-effects of immunity associated with traditional antibodies.

Another is in the area of redesigned drugs, where the benefits of ITRI's kinase-based drug design research in treating acute myeloid leukemia was presented.

Diagnostic biomarker research focused on liver, renal and oncology diseases, all of which are common in Taiwan and Asia, was another area highlighted by ITRI over the course of the convention.
