(Taiwan) TaiGen announces milestones in its drug development program to supporters, government VIPs at Taipei event

8 May, 2008
Taipei-based TaiGen Biotechnology made two announcements relating to recent milestones in its drug development program to a gathering of its local supporters, investors and government officials in Taipei on Wednesday.

Founder and CEO of TaiGen Biotechnology Dr. Hsu Ming-chu speaks at an event announcing the company's recent drug development milestones, held in Taipei, 7 May, 2008.

As announced by the company earlier in April, Nemonoxacin, TaiGen's drug candidate for community-acquired pneumonia, during its Phase II clinical trial had met the primary endpoint of non-inferiority versus levofloxacin, the leading drug on the market for this condition, a positive result.

According to TaiGen, Nemonoxacin is a novel non-fluorinated quinolone that has a broad spectrum of activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and atypical pathogens. Nemonoxacin possesses the first-in-class activity against MRSA (both hospital- and community-acquired) and vancomycin-resistant pathogens.

Also as announced in April, enrollment for a Phase I clinical trial under US FDA IND authority had began for TaiGen's stem cell mobilizer drug candidate TG-0054. The drug will initially be developed for the indication of stem cell transplantation in cancer patients.

Speaking at the event in praise of TaiGen's achievements were the Speaker of the Legislature, Wang Jin-ping; the Director of the Ministry of Economic Affairs' Industrial Development Bureau, Chen Chao-yih; and the previous Minister of Economic Affairs and current chairman of Taiwan's Council for Economic Planning and Development (CEPD), Ho Mei-yueh.

The high number of notable figures from the government present at Wednesday's event reflected a consensus that the result indicated Taiwan's homegrown biotech industry may at last be coming of age.
