News yesterday that Switzerland's Roche, maker of the only effective antiviral for the avian flu virus, Tamiflu, is considering granting Taiwan permission to make a generic version of the drug, is benefiting many local listed pharmaceutical manufacturers.
Yung Shin Pharmaceutical Industries Co. (1716) reported that if the government is willing to release the formula for making Tamiflu, it will be able to produce Tamiflu tablets in its affiliate's factory. The company's stock rose NT$2.20 to NT33.80 on the news, rising by the 7 percent daily limit.
China Chemical & Pharmaceutical Co. (1701) rose 65 cents to NT$10.15, and Standard Chemical & Pharmaceutical Co. (1720 TT) added NT$1.40 to NT$22.05. Both company's stocks also jumped by the 7 percent daily limit.
Meanwhile, Sinphar Pharmaceutical (1734), boosted by the strong demand for tonic products over the public's concerns over avian flu, estimates October sales will hit a record high.
