For the medical device sector, this forum was held on Saturday, October 1st.
The Industrial Technology Research Institute's (ITRI) Biomedical Engineering Center (BMEC) had a range of its inventions and prototypes on display at the exhibition, and at the partnering forum introduced its handheld bio-electronic nose, an electronic stethoscope, and a type of breathable polyurethane for surgical gloves.
The world's first such handheld device of its kind, the bio-electronic nose utilizes peptides as sensing materials similar to the human smell mechanism to detect gases in low concentrations. The device would have a number of industrial, medical and environmental uses, according to its developers at BMEC. The device could even be used to detect and confirm bad breath in people who deny their embarrassing condition, claimed its inventors.
As well as the usual array of offerings from small-scale operators, Taiwan's largest applied research institutes were well represented at the exhibition, with booths from ITRI; the Animal Technology Institute, Taiwan; the Development Center of Biotechnology (DCB); and the Medical Mechatronics Research Laboratory, Chang Gung University.
