(Taiwan) Fraunhoher USA Inc signs collaboration agreement with DCB of Taiwan

Life Science News (Press release, Development Center for Biotechnology, Taiwan)

1 October, 2005
TAIPEI, Taiwan -- /Development Center for Biotechnology/-- The Development Center for Biotechnology (DCB) recently signed an agreement with Fraunhofer USA Inc.—Center for Molecular Biotechnology (FhCMB). The agreement will allow researchers to utilize FhCMB's plant-based expression system to develop new cancer biomarkers along with related diagnostics and therapeutics.

Flu vaccine is also considered as one of the projects. This new platform technology offers advantages in speed, safety, and cost during the drug discovery and development stages.

Besides the research collaboration, FhCMB, the State of Delaware, and DCB will also sponsor overseas training programs and provide financial support to the projects. This collaboration will strengthen Taiwan's position in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries.

Dr. Vidadi M. Yusibov, executive director of FhCMB (left) and Dr. Juilien Huang, president of DCB, exchange gifts at the signing of the two groups' collaborative agreement in Taipei.

Based on the cooperative memorandum initiated in September 2003, the executive director of FhCMB, Dr. Vidadi M. Yusibov, accompanied by the director of the Delaware State Taipei Office, met with the president of DCB, Dr. Juilien Huang, to further discuss the collaboration details and ratify the material transfer and evaluation agreement on August 31st. In 2002, Dr. Barry Marrs from FhCMB visited Taipei and had showed their industrial biotechnologies and concepts with which Taiwan may be able to advance into the so called "Third Industrial Revolution".

On the other hand, after a visiting trip to FhCMB and impressed by their industrial enzyme technologies, the former vice president of Economic Construction Committee of Taiwan, Ho Mei-Yueh, now the minister of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, encouraged a joint collaboration effort between FhCMB and DCB. With the support from Taiwan Government, this industrial enzyme project was implemented in 2004 and will be completed by 2006.
